“Snow Lake Forest Piercing the Fog” by Scott Rinckenberger is a fine art photograph of breathtaking restraint and ethereal beauty. A small cluster of heavily snow-laden conifers emerges from an almost total whiteout — ghostly, soft-edged, and impossibly delicate — before dissolving back into the enveloping fog on either side. The composition is vast and spare, the trees occupying just a small window at the heart of the frame, surrounded on all sides by an expanse of luminous white that feels both infinite and tender. There is no horizon, no ground, no sky — only this fleeting apparition of a forest, here and then gone. The palette barely registers as black and white at all, existing instead in the palest imaginable range of greys and whites, the whole image feeling closer to a watercolor wash than a photograph. It is quietly one of the most affecting images in Scott's body of work — a study in what remains when everything extraneous is erased, and a reminder that the mountains, in their most veiled and elusive moods, offer a particular kind of beauty that asks nothing of you but to be present for it.
