"Bad Behavior" is an acrylic and oil pastel painting on canvas by Christy Hopkins in which deep, velvety black shapes crowd forward like silhouetted leaves, opening windows onto a sunlit tangle of color behind them: turquoise, sea glass green, hot magenta, blush, and pale lemon, with passages of grainy oil pastel cobalt glinting through the gaps. Fine oil pastel lines of pale yellow and blue trace the edges of the dark forms, stitching the two worlds together. Working without a set plan, Hopkins lets negative space do as much of the work as color, and the effect is like standing in a shaded garden at dusk, looking out toward the last of the light. Dramatic and luminous at once, it rewards a slower look, and true to its title, the dark shapes refuse to stay politely in the background.
