“Girl on a Log” is a loose, outdoor figure study of a young child perched quietly on a weathered log, her attention turned downward in a moment of absorbed stillness. Scherer surrounds the figure with an energetic tangle of greens — olive, chartreuse, and deep forest — built up in broad, overlapping strokes that give the natural setting a rugged, almost restless quality. The pale warmth of the girl's bare legs and the textured grey of the log anchor her in the composition, while her face remains loosely defined, keeping the focus on mood over likeness. The result is a small painting with a strong sense of place — candid, physical, and quietly alive. Scherer studied with NW Master William Cumming, whom she met at the Art Institute of Seattle, in 1984. His influence was instrumental in her understanding of color, design and its use in painting. Amy passes along years of experience and wisdom to her own students now as well as pursuing her full time career as a professional artist in Washington State.
