"Sable and Carbone" by Shaun Heslop is the darkest and most materially dramatic of the series — a large disc of deep charcoal microcement, its surface mottled and complex with tonal variation from near-black to a smoky grey-white, floats against a pale cream ground of equal textural refinement. The surface of the disc has the appearance of weathered stone, carbon, or the face of the moon seen through a telescope — pitted, uneven, and possessed of a quiet geological weight. It is a work about calamity held in stillness, the dense, turbulent interior of the form contained within a perfect circle that offers no way in and no way out. Shaun’s debut series captures the boundless experience of navigating ocean-crossing; weeks of endless horizons where celestial bodies provided the only sense of time and place through light. Shaun is trained in celestial navigation, finish carpentry and sculpture. "Sable to Carbone" encapsulates a sense of calamity through visual depth and form.
