Out of a deep black ground, a luminous cluster of color rises in "Make a Scene": sky blue, cream, peach, and orange petals layered with olive and chartreuse, and dense patches of oil pastel cobalt flecked with red that read almost like woven cloth. On the right, a single white bloom leans out on its stem into the darkness, while a fine, pale gold line of oil pastel wanders across the lower field like a thread left trailing. Christy Hopkins lets the black do real work here, pressing in from the edges so each color feels hard-won and bright. Dramatic and intimate, it has the atmosphere of a bouquet glimpsed by lamplight, each burst of color stepping out of the dark as if taking the stage.
