“Red and Grey Sublimation” is a raw, atmospheric portrait of a young figure, her long dark hair merging with the turbulent ground around her as if she is simultaneously emerging from and dissolving into it. The cool grey palette is disrupted by deep burgundy and flashes of burnt red — scraped and layered into the surface with an urgent, physical energy. Broad, gestural marks build up the background while the face holds just enough precision to feel present without being fixed. The result is a work that feels emotionally charged and unresolved in the best sense — caught between presence and erasure, stillness and tension.

Scherer studied with NW Master William Cumming, whom she met at the Art Institute of Seattle, in 1984. His influence was instrumental in her understanding of color, design and its use in painting. Amy passes along years of experience and wisdom to her own students now as well as pursuing her full time career as a professional artist in Washington State.
