“Winslow Pond” is a dramatic, large-scale landscape in which an enormous churning sky of layered grey and green swallows nearly the entire canvas, a luminous break of pale light at its center suggesting something vast and unstoppable in motion. At the horizon, vivid bursts of red, pink, and yellow erupt against the muted surroundings — not quite fire, not quite sunset, but something that carries the visual force of both — reflected faintly in the dark, still water below. Oaksmith's brushwork is confident and atmospheric, the clouds built with a physical richness that gives the painting real weight and presence. The result is a work that feels simultaneously beautiful and unsettling, nature rendered at its most indifferent and most sublime. Ash draws inspiration through travel, memories of childhood summers on the Great Lakes and road trips through the Great Plains states. These experiences are realized through vivid colors and texture in ‘color field landscapes’. Ash’s recent paintings are inspired by the beauty of the Olympic Mountains and Greater Puget Sound Area.  Wind plays an essential role in each of her paintings, and it is the interaction of wind in sweeping landscapes that she thinks about during those first brush strokes. There are times that we seek out change and upheaval, like a howling gale, just as there are times when we need complete stillness and order.
