“Dance of the Trees” is a large, commanding landscape in which sky utterly dominates — brooding storm clouds in layered greys, lavender, and soft white billow across the upper expanse, punctuated by flashes of gold and blush that keep the atmosphere alive and shifting. The earthy foreground anchors the drama above: a wide open plain in ochre, olive, and pale sand, flanked by two asymmetrical tree forms caught mid-gesture against the churning sky, as if in conversation with the weather around them. Oaksmith's loose, painterly brushwork carries a classical sensibility — nodding to the great landscape tradition while remaining thoroughly contemporary in its emotional restraint and palette. At 72 inches tall, it commands a room with gravitas and quiet authority. The title earns its name — the trees feel animated, caught mid-gesture against the churning sky, as if in dialogue with the weather around them. The painterly, loose brushwork has a classical sensibility that nods to the great landscape tradition (think Constable, think early Hudson River), while remaining thoroughly contemporary in its emotional restraint and palette. This piece would command a room. It reads beautifully at scale and would work equally well in a residential great room or a corporate lobby that wants gravitas without abstraction. Ash draws inspiration through travel, memories of childhood summers on the Great Lakes and road trips through the Great Plains states. These experiences are realized through vivid colors and texture in ‘color field landscapes’. Ash’s recent paintings are inspired by the beauty of the Olympic Mountains and Greater Puget Sound Area.  Wind plays an essential role in each of her paintings, and it is the interaction of wind in sweeping landscapes that she thinks about during those first brush strokes. There are times that we seek out change and upheaval, like a howling gale, just as there are times when we need complete stillness and order.
